Jerold O'Brien has a fundamental concern for the environment and is a proponent of sustainable and organic practices for viticulture and other food sources.Estate Organic Vineyard Our 100 percent organic viticulture starts with a fundamental concern for the environment, and expands to include a healthier and more delicious end product for our customers. We employ organically approved and naturally occurring substances in all vineyard applications, which means that no chemical herbicides, insecticides, fungicides or synthetic fertilizers are used in our vineyard.
Intense FlavorsWhile implementing these methods is costly and labor intensive, organic farming produces fresher fruit and healthier vines than traditional methods using man-made chemicals. The result is award-winning wine with more intensity and stronger flavors than its counterparts. Mountain Appellation Another secret to producing premium fruit is our location high in the mountains. Mountain soil tends to be poor, without a lot of nutrients. As a result, our vines have to struggle more to produce, which yields smaller lots of grapes with more character and a complex variety of flavors. Influenced by the Monterey Bay, the cooler climate of the Silver Mountain also means that the fruit takes longer to ripen— resulting in longer hang time and enhanced flavor. Mt. Eden Clone Silver Mountain's Estate Chardonnay is from the Mount Eden clone, brought from Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy by Paul Masson in the 1890's. Martin Ray planted the clone at his vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains (now Mt. Eden Vineyards) in the early 1940’s. It was with this clone that Martin Ray revolutionized the art of winemaking in California by using noble Burgundian varietals at a time when most wine was blended from inferior varieties. He claimed that California could produce wine as good as that from France, and indeed he proved his point. The Mount Eden clone is still grown in a few vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and elsewhere, while most vineyards today have planted higher yielding varieties. The typical yield for the Mount Eden clone is only one to two tons per acre, and the vines produce fruit with tiny berries. Richness and Individuality Silver Mountain's unique combination of climate, geography, abundant sunlight and organic growing techniques creates the ideal backdrop for producing wines of richness and individuality.
